Unilever has committed €35 million to transform its research facilities in Mumbai and Bengaluru into AI-driven innovation centres and a dedicated Bio-Futures Hub. The capital expenditure expands the consumer goods group’s technical infrastructure, building on €20 million deployed across its Indian research and development network over the past five years.
The investment shifts Unilever's Indian R&D footprint from standard product adaptation to high-throughput, computational formulation science that feeds its global portfolio.
Virtual models and lab automation
The technical upgrades focus on integrating predictive modelling, digital twins, and collaborative robots into the group's formulation workflow. Digital twin technology creates virtual simulation models that allow researchers to evaluate chemical interactions computationally before moving to physical bench work.
Once virtual testing identifies viable candidates, co-bot-powered laboratory automation takes over high-throughput physical experimentation. These collaborative robots manage repetitive mixing, measuring, and testing tasks, significantly shortening formulation cycles compared to conventional manual methods.
By pairing predictive digital models with physical robotic execution, the facilities filter out non-viable chemical combinations prior to committing physical lab resources, accelerating the preliminary stages of product creation.
Bio-futures and microbiome research
Alongside digital automation, the capital will fund a dedicated Bio-Futures Hub, broadening the scope of scientific inquiry conducted across both sites. The research agenda for the upgraded facilities spans microbiome science, human biology, biotechnology, and sustainable packaging solutions.
The focus on microbiome science and human biology aligns the hubs with modern formulation research, where host-microbiome interactions are central to personal care product design. Meanwhile, the biotechnology and sustainable packaging mandates address materials science, targeting alternative active ingredients and packaging formats for the group's global beauty and personal care portfolio.
From automated bench to market
Unilever has not disclosed execution timelines, initial brand applications, or potential scientific partnerships for the upgraded hubs. The key milestone to monitor will be the first commercial beauty formulations originating from the automated platforms, alongside any external biotechnology or academic partnerships announced as the facilities come online.
