Lush Cosmetics Partners with The Waste Lab in Dubai

Lush Cosmetics has teamed up with UAE-based start-up The Waste Lab to tackle waste reduction at its manufacturing facilities in Dubai. The Waste Lab, a female-led company, specializes in transforming food scraps and leftovers from hotels, businesses, restaurants, and communities into compost.

Lush’s Jebel Ali facility, situated on the outskirts of Dubai, produces around 25 types of fresh products, incorporating fresh fruit, vegetables, and herbs as key ingredients. “We were ecstatic to find a partner like The Waste Lab, a company that aligns with our vision for a circular economy,” said Anita Baker, Managing Director of Lush MENA. She emphasized the need for regenerative, circulative practices and permaculture, stating, “Sustainability is simply not enough.”

The Waste Lab was co-founded in 2021 by Lara Hussein and Ceylan Uren. Hussein highlighted the significance of their collaboration with Lush, noting, “Our work at the Lush manufacturing hub in Jebel Ali exemplifies how innovative and nature-based waste management can transform food scraps into valuable compost. This compost not only reduces waste but also supports local farms by enriching the soil and fostering regenerative agriculture.”

Currently, Lush’s scraps are being used to develop compost mixes in the R&D phase, aimed at enhancing soil quality and promoting regenerative agricultural practices. This initiative aligns with the UAE’s goal of achieving zero landfill waste by 2050.
