DCGI Urges Cosmetics Industry to Follow Regulations, Importers Raise Concerns

The Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) has directed the cosmetics industry to adhere to strict regulatory protocols and avoid making misleading claims, particularly those that overlap with pharmaceutical products. 

During a recent industry meeting, stakeholders expressed concerns over stringent import regulations, stating that many imported cosmetics are being rejected at ports due to non-compliance with Indian standards, leading to financial losses for importers. 

DCGI emphasized that cosmetics must comply with the Drugs & Cosmetics Act, 1940, which defines them as products intended for cleansing, beautifying, or altering appearance. Officials noted that certain claims—such as stem cell therapy for younger-looking skin—blur the line between cosmetics and drugs, necessitating clearer regulatory distinctions. 

Industry experts argue that India’s regulatory environment is more complex than in other countries, creating compliance challenges. They have urged authorities to streamline approval processes while ensuring product safety and quality. 

As India’s cosmetics market continues to grow, regulatory clarity will be crucial in balancing consumer protection with industry innovation.
