The Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) has recently introduced a new regulation for cosmetics, aimed at ensuring the safety and quality of imported cosmetic products. According to the latest guidelines, no cosmetics can be imported unless the ‘use-by’ date is at least six months from the date of import. This measure ensures that consumers receive products that are fresh and effective throughout their intended shelf life.

The DCGI’s regulation also mandates that all imported cosmetics undergo rigorous testing for microbiological and heavy metal contamination in accredited laboratories. This step is crucial in maintaining high safety standards and protecting consumer health. Additionally, detailed labeling requirements have been introduced, including warnings about proper use, potential allergic reactions, and precautions.

Another significant aspect of the new regulations is the requirement for regular inspections. The DCGI has implemented a protocol for periodic inspection of manufacturing facilities, warehouses, and retail outlets to ensure compliance with these stringent standards. Inspections will verify that cosmetic products are stored correctly, labels are accurate and informative, and that any potential risks are promptly addressed.

Furthermore, the DCGI has set specific limits for harmful substances such as Hexachlorophene, a chemical that can pose health risks. The regulation specifies that cosmetics containing Hexachlorophene must adhere to strict concentration limits to ensure consumer safety.

These new regulations reflect the DCGI’s commitment to aligning with international best practices and enhancing the overall quality of cosmetic products available in the Indian market. By implementing these measures, the DCGI aims to provide consumers with safe, high-quality cosmetic products and to foster trust in the industry1.

The cosmetic industry is expected to comply with these new regulations, ensuring that all products meet the stringent criteria set forth by the DCGI. This move is anticipated to have a positive impact on consumer confidence and the reputation of cosmetic brands in India1. to aligning with international best practices and enhancing the overall quality of cosmetic products available in the Indian market. By implementing these measures, the DCGI aims to provide consumers with safe, high-quality cosmetic products and to foster trust in the industry.
