England Bans Plastic Wet Wipes Under New Law, Effective 2027

UK government announces 2027 ban on plastic wet wipes to reduce pollution

The UK government has officially signed into law a ban on the sale and supply of wet wipes containing plastic in England, marking a major step forward in tackling pollution and protecting waterways. The legislation, announced in November 2025, will come into force in spring 2027, allowing the industry an 18-month transition period to adapt and clear existing stock.

Plastic wet wipes have long been identified as a significant environmental hazard. When flushed, they contribute to sewer blockages known as “fatbergs”, costing water companies millions annually, and break down into microplastics that poison wildlife and enter the food chain.

While exemptions exist for certain medical and industrial uses, the ban is expected to significantly reduce plastic waste from everyday consumer products. Environmental groups, who have campaigned for years against plastic wet wipes, welcomed the legislation as a long-awaited victory for sustainability.
