Symrise recently presented Crinipan® PMC green, it’s novel Anti-Dandruff active. The new molecule’s efficacy is based on an innovative mode of action, and it shows comparable results to established anti-dandruff actives.

Dandruff is a common scalp condition and formulators of Anti-Dandruff solutions mainly have to rely on three established anti-dandruff actives: zinc pyrithione, climbazole and piroctone olamine. But with consumers expecting products that reflect the natural, sustainable with conventional efficacy, formulators are looking for solutions. With Crinipan® PMC Green, Symrise opens up completely new perspectives for cosmetic manufacturers and their dandruff control strategies. They will be able to achieve benchmark efficacy by using a 100 % bio-based, environmentally friendly anti-dandruff active.

Contemporary scientific literature reports the relevance of Malassezia yeast in dandruff formation and the big role of bacteria. The ratio of propionibacteria is more than staphylococci on a healthy scalp, while the opposite applies to dandruff infested scalp. Symrise has now discovered that application of Crinipan® PMC green supports a favourable shift in bacterial balance promoting a healthier scalp. Malassezia activates the ingredient with its enzymes.

“More than 45 years of expertise in the area of Micro Protection enable us to launch Crinipan® PMC green. We also thank Professor Dr Peter Mayser, a renowned dermatologist and dedicated expert in Malassezia research for his constant support during our joint research project with the University of Giessen on dandruff”, says Dr Christin Koch, Head of Microbiology Research at the Global Innovation Cosmetic Ingredients Division of Symrise. “Our first active ingredient, climbazole, dates back to the year 1975. Crinipan® AD (climbazole) has for years been a proven and established ingredient on the cosmetics market. After many years of extensive research and development, we are now launching the next generation active, which particularly stands out with its innovative mode of action.” “Developing green products like Crinipan® PMC green is in line with the Symrise corporate sustainability strategy,” says Dr Florian Genrich, Senior Global Product Manager Skin Protection at Symrise. “In future, we are going to continue our path of developing more and more natural ingredients to serve our customer´s and consumer´s needs.”

Symrise has already demonstrated Crinipan® PMC green´s effectiveness in a clinical shampoo study, demonstrating comparable efficacy known from conventional actives like climbazole. Application of the ingredient by test subjects with dandruff resulted in a healthier ratio of two dominant species of scalp bacteria. This finding is based on ex vivo samples that Symrise researchers took from the scalp of study participants, before and after a 30-day application of Crinipan® PMC green.

Crinipan® PMC green is winning accolades, the latest one being winning the first place at the prestigious BSB Award 2020 in the category Most Innovative Active Ingredient/Scalp, Barrier/ Redness.
