Greenpeace slams Dove over plastic pollution

Greenpeace UK has recently launched a campaign against Dove and its parent company, Unilever, accusing them of contributing significantly to plastic pollution. This campaign subverts Dove’s 2022 “Toxic Influence” ad, highlighting the environmental impact of the brand’s plastic waste.

On September 5, 2024, Greenpeace activists staged a dramatic protest at Unilever’s headquarters. They scaled the building, attaching a large artwork depicting a young girl peeling back Dove’s “Real Beauty” branding to reveal plastic waste. The protest led to the arrest of 35 activists under the new Public Order Act.

Greenpeace’s campaign criticizes Unilever for rolling back its plastic reduction targets and continuing to produce single-use plastic sachets, which are difficult to recycle and contribute to environmental degradation, particularly in countries like the Philippines and Indonesia. The organization is urging Unilever to commit to phasing out single-use plastics and to advocate for stronger measures at the upcoming UN Global Plastics Treaty negotiations.

Unilever has acknowledged the criticism, stating that their efforts to tackle plastic waste are ongoing and that they are committed to finding sustainable solutions.

This campaign underscores the growing pressure on major corporations to address their environmental impact and adopt more sustainable practices.
