BASF Partners with INOCAS for Sustainable Oil Supply

BASF has entered into a long-term agreement with INOCAS S.A. (Innovative Oil and Carbon Solutions) to secure a sustainable supply of Macaúba oil for its personal and home care solutions. This partnership aims to expand BASF’s renewable-based portfolio and support INOCAS’s efforts to scale up Macaúba oil production in Brazil.

Macaúba oil, derived from the Macaúba tree (Acrocomia aculeata), is known for its versatility and environmental benefits. The tree thrives in semi-arid conditions and poor soils, making it an ideal candidate for sustainable agriculture. INOCAS has developed an innovative model to cultivate Macaúba trees on degraded pastureland, improving soil quality and productivity while supporting regenerative agriculture.

Under the agreement, BASF will use Macaúba kernel oil in its personal and home care products in Brazil and Europe, with commercial pilot volumes expected to be available in 2025. The pulp oil will be used to produce bio-naphtha, which can be converted into polymers, solvents, detergents, lubricants, synthetic fibers, fuels, and other products.

Mary Kurian, President of Care Chemicals at BASF, emphasized the company’s commitment to sustainable sourcing and protecting ecosystems. The partnership with INOCAS aligns with BASF’s goal of offering products with a lower carbon footprint and promoting sustainable practices.
